How the model works
Here we use decimal units: 1 GB = 1,000 MB; 1 MB = 8 megabits. Mbps means megabits per second, not megabytes per second.
- Daily MB = photos Γ MB per photo + video minutes Γ MB per minute.
- Trip GB = daily MB Γ days Γ· 1,000.
- Free GB = total β system/apps β existing files.
- Backup seconds = trip MB Γ 8 Γ· upload Mbps.
Files use the fixed sizes you choose. The upload estimate assumes a steady connection with no overhead; actual file sizes and transfer times vary. Backing up does not automatically remove originals from your phone. This page never accesses or uploads your files.
π― Three-step documentary challenge
- Before changing anything, predict whether the example trip fits.
- Set video minutes to 20. Can you make the trip fit by changing only video size per minute? Find the largest whole-number size that works.
- Double upload speed. What changes: storage, backup time, or both?
